rava Idli

Recipe for Rava Idli with Onion-Capsicum-Tomato Chutney

Today, the recipe I am sharing is Rawa Idli. I have used Upma Rawa ( Semolina) in this recipe to make Idli. For my readers who are new to this food: Idli is a popular south Indian breakfast that is usually made by soaking, grinding and fermenting a batter made with rice and skinless black gram lentils. The fermented batter is steamed, and the resulting light and fluffy dumplings are served with chutney and sambar. The process is elaborate and requires planning.

However, today’s recipe is a quick and easy recipe that does not require grinding and overnight fermenting. Also, instead of making it with rice, it is made with wheat semolina. It tastes delicious and is easy to make. Also, I am sharing a quick and easy chutney made with onions, capsicum and tomatoes that goes well with these soft and flavourful Idlis.

Recently, I shared the recipe for Idli from Idli Rava, in which I made Idli with Rice Rawa (coarsely ground rice). If you are an idli fan, check out these 8 Idli Recipes that You Must Try in Your Kitchen. Also, I have put together many chutney recipes that pair well with South Indian breakfasts. 4. Then, transfer the mixture into a mixing bowl and let it cool completely.

  5. Once the mixture is cooled, add yoghurt, salt and water and mix well. You should get a homogeneous batter.

  6. Add baking soda.

  7. Now, grease the Idli plates with oil or ghee. Pour the batter onto the idli plates. You can even place tomato slices or some cashews on the plate before pouring the batter.

  8. Bring the water in the idli steamer to a boil. Then, place the idli plates inside the steamer.

If you live in Germany, you can follow the same recipe and replace semolina with Dinkelgrieß. Dinkelgrieß is coursely ground Spelt wheat. You can get it easily in supermarkets in Germany. I bought it from Netto. The brand name is Naturkind. The taste is not exactly the same as what you get with wheat semolina., but it is certainly nice. Check out these pictures of idlis made with Dinkelgrieß.
