What Lies Between Us- Storyline and Book Review
The relationship between Maggi and Nina is unlike any normal mother-daughter relationship. Nina has imprisoned Maggi in her own house, chained her ankles to restrict her movements and isolated her from the world. She provides her mother with food, provisions and occasional company over dinner, but nothing beyond that. She wants to punish her mother, whom she holds responsible for everything wrong and unfortunate that has happened in her life.
Maggi is an older woman but not old enough to count her last days. She wants to escape and somehow find a way to reach out to someone who could help her, but all her attempts fail. Nina goes to work every day, leaving Maggi alone in the attic. Maggi spends her days alone and desperate. She eats, bathes, looks out the window, and looks for opportunities to escape.
The story alternates between the present and the past, and the alternating narrations from the mother and daughter bring the reader closer to the central characters, the reasons for the soured relationship, and the extreme steps taken by the daughter to punish the mother. As each chapter unravels an episode from the past and connects it with the present, a new perspective develops, leaving the reader torn between the two sides.
The story goes back to when the mother, father and daughter lived happily like any normal family. Then, the sudden disappearance of the father, followed by strained relations between the mother and daughter, lead to tough teenage years. Unprecedented and unfortunate incidents, some planned and others unforeseen, lead to a life full of misadventures beyond anyone’s imagination.
Both characters are strong and have a clear reason for their actions. While each does what she thinks is right, things do go wrong and have long-lasting consequences that neither had imagined.
What lies between is a story full of twists and turns. Just when you feel that you’ve understood a character entirely and can justify her actions, a turn in the story forces you to think the other way. This book is indeed a page-turner and an exciting read for all mystery lovers.
