Rock Paper Scissors

Rock Paper Scissors- Storyline and Book Review

Rock Paper Scissors is a story about Mr and Mrs Wright – Adam, a workaholic screenwriter and his wife, Amelia, who works at an animal care centre and characters that touch their lives at different times. It hovers over the theme of ‘how well we know the people we think we know’.

Adam and Amelia are almost at the end of their relationship. Amelia wins a weekend stay in the Scottish highlands and thinks that spending a weekend together, away from the world, would be the best way to give their marriage one last chance. Hence, she convinces Adam for the trip.

After a long drive from London, a surprise awaits them when they reach their destination. The place is an old chapel converted into a living space. It is in the middle of nowhere and looks old, worn down and derelict.

Right from the moment they enter the chapel, strange things start happening. The mysterious nooks and crannies of the place, its isolated location, the cold and snowy weather, and the absence of any human anywhere in the vicinity create a spooky atmosphere. The two imagine that they are alone in this desolate location. But unknown to them, a person is constantly watching them and is responsible for bringing them here. This person has also ensured that Adam and Amelia don’t leave the place at their will.

As they spend time in this place, they find many clues that link it to their past. They are confused, scared and astonished at the many strange ways the house connects them to their past and is yet so alien.

The story gets narrated in first person by Amelia and Adam. Alternating between these narrations are secret letters written by the wife to her husband on each of their wedding anniversaries, citing how, according to her, the relationship slowly deteriorated and finally came to the point where it was no more possible for her to continue. Through these narrations, the stories of their past get revealed.

This book will engross you with its interesting twists and turns all the way to the end. It is quite an engaging story that keeps you hooked, asking for more even after the end of the book.
