Kada Prasad

Recipe for Kada Prasad (Wheat Flour Halwa)

The recipe that I am sharing today is very close to my heart. Growing up in the northern part of India and visiting Gurudwara ( a place of worship of the Sikhs) almost every weekend, I have eaten Kada Prasad many times, and each time, I relished and savoured it more than the previous time. Kada Prasad is the most commonly prepared offering to God in Gurudwaras. It is shared in small portions with all the devotees after the prayers are over.

Kada Prasad is made with whole wheat flour, ghee, and sugar, all added in equal amounts. Double the quantity of water is added to give it its soft, melt-in-the-mouth texture. The ratio followed in the recipe is fixed: 1:1:1:2, i.e., for one portion of flour, you need one portion of ghee, one portion of sugar, and two portions of water.

The association of Kada Prasad with the divine is so strong that in most homes in India, this halwa is not prepared as a dessert ( say, to be eaten after the main course) but almost always as an offering to God. It is made in small quantities and shared between everyone, which makes sense also from the perspective that it is rich and has a good amount of sugar and ghee.

Recently, during the Ganesha festival, I prepared Kada Prasad. It was super delicious and reminded me of my childhood visits to Guridwaras with family and friends.

Let’s check out the recipe:
