Dinner Rolls with Sour Cream and Sunflower Seeds
Making bread at home is a truly satisfying experience. After all the effort of kneading, resting, knocking, resting and baking, it is a very pleasing feeling when you get the perfect loaf of bread.

Today’s recipe is for Dinner Rolls with Sour Cream and Sunflower Seeds. These slightly crusty bread rolls, which are soft on the inside, are perfect for sandwiches and burgers.

Let’s start with the recipe:
Kitchen Equipment:
- Mixing Bowl for kneading the dough, or use your kitchen counter
- Kitchen Scale
- Measuring Spoons
- Baking Tray with Baking Paper
If you want to avoid the extra work of kneading the dough, you can even consider getting yourself a Bread Maker or a Food Processor.
Ingredients for Dinner Rolls with Sour Cream and Sunflower Seeds:
- 500 gm Refined Flour
- 7 gm Instant Dry yeast
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Sugar
- 100 gm Sour Cream
- 200 ml Lukewarm Water
- 50 gm Sunflower seeds
Some Additional Notes about Ingredient Sourcing in Germany:
- Refined Flour: Use Weizenmehl Typ 550. Learn more about Flour varieties in German Supermarkets here.
- Instant Dry yeast: Use one 7 gm sachet of trockene Hefe.
- Salt: Called Salz in German. Read more about salt varieties in German Supermarkets here.
- Sugar: You can use any sugar of your preference. I have used brown sugar in my recipe. Read more about sugar varieties in German Supermarkets here.
- Sour Cream: It is called Saure Sahne in German. It is available in the refrigerator section of supermarkets. Learn more about cream-based products here.
- Sunflower seeds: These are called Sonnenblumenkerne in German. They are commonly available in supermarkets.
Method to make Dinner Rolls with Sour Cream and Sunflower Seeds:Â
- Combine flour, salt, sugar and yeast. Mix well.

- Add sour cream and water.

- Stretch and knead for 6-8 minutes. This step is very important. Stretching and kneading will help form gluten.

- Then, divide the dough into 12 equal parts.

- Round the dough and place the dough balls on a baking sheet.

- Brush the surface with water and cover the top surface with sunflower seeds.


- Cover and rest the dough balls in a warm place till they double in size.

- Bake them in a preheated oven ( the oven should be preheated at 180 degrees C for 10 minutes) at 180 degrees C for 25-30 minutes.

- Remove and let them cool on the kitchen counter. Once cooled, the dinner rolls are ready to be served.

- Add sour cream and water.
- Stretch and knead for 6-8 minutes.
- Then, divide the dough into 12 equal parts.
- Round the dough and place the dough balls on a baking sheet.
- Brush the surface with water and cover the top surface with sunflower seeds.
- Cover and rest the dough balls in a warm place till they double in size.
- Bake them in a preheated oven ( the oven should be preheated at 180 degrees C for 10 minutes), at 180 degrees C for 25-30 minutes.
- Remove and let them cool on the kitchen counter.
- Once cooled, the dinner rolls are ready to be served.
