Plum Salsa and Open Sandwich with Plum Salsa and Cheese

What can be more refreshing than a freshly made salsa enlivened with a dash of lemon juice? Today’s recipe, Plum Salsa, is a delicious and easy-to-make dish. You can top it on toasted bread, add eggs, etc., to make a well-balanced breakfast, or serve it with crackers to make a lovely evening snack.

Recently, when I made plum salsa, I served it with sliced baguette toasted in olive oil and boiled eggs. It was a delicious and well-balanced breakfast, and my family totally loved it.

So, in this post, I have shared not only the recipe for Plum Salsa but also other ingredients that went into making it a complete meal.

Let’s start.

Equipment Needed:

You don’t need any specialized equipment to make this simple dish. You just need knives and a cutting board to chop all the veggies finely. You can use a food processor to make it easy and fast. Then, you need a mixing bowl to combine everything.

To make the open sandwich with plum salsa, cheese and eggs, you need a saucepan to boil the eggs and a crepe pan to toast the bread.

IngredientsΒ for Plum Salsa

  • 125Β gmΒ Dried Unsweetened Plums
  • 1Β Large Onion; Finely Chopped
  • 1Β Medium-Sized Tomato, deseeded and finely chopped
  • 1Β Small Capsicum, deseeded and finely chopped
  • 1/4th of a large Cucumber; finely chopped
  • 2-3Β tbspΒ Finely Chopped Parsley
  • 4-5Β Green Chillies; Finely Chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • 3Β tbspΒ Lemon Juice
  • 1Β tbspΒ Vinegar

Additional Ingredients to make Open Sandwich with Plum Salsa, Cheese and Eggs

  • 200Β gmΒ Cottage Cheese
  • 100Β gmΒ Feta Cheese
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil; to drizzle
  • Toasted Bread
  • Boiled Eggs

Method to make Plum Salsa

  • Finely chop the dried plums in a food processor. Transfer it to a mixing bowl.


  • Add finely chopped onion, tomato, capsicum, cucumber, green chillies and parsley. Mix.


  • Add salt, lemon juice and vinegar. Mix well.


  • Plum Salsa is ready to be served.

Additional steps to make Open Sandwich with Plum Salsa, Cheese and Eggs

  • Boil the eggs. Once done, peel and cut them into halves.
  • Also, toast bread with a little bit of olive oil.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine crumbled feta and cottage cheese.


  • To serve, first spread a layer of feta and cottage cheese mix.


  • Top it with plum salsa. Drizzle some olive oil.


  • Serve it with toasted bread and boiled eggs to make it a well-balanced meal.

Notes about Ingredient Sourcing in Germany:

  • Dried Unsweetened Plums: These are available in supermarkets’ dry fruits/nuts section. These are called Pflaumen in German. Buy the ones that are de-seeded (entsteint in German).
  • Onion, Tomato, Cucumber, Parsley, Lemon: These are available in the vegetable section of supermarkets. They are called Zwiebel, Tomate, Gurke, Petersilie, and Zitrone, respectively.
  • Green Chillies: These are available in Indian shops. You can also use fresh or canned Jalapenos in place of Indian green chillies.
  • Vinegar: It is available in supermarkets. Called Tafelessig in German.
  • Cottage Cheese: ItΒ is available in supermarkets’ refrigerator sections. It is called kΓΆrniger FrischkΓ€se/HΓΌttenkΓ€se in German. The low-fat variant is also available. Read more about it in my article: Fresh Cheese in German Supermarkets-Explained.
  • Feta Cheese: ItΒ is available in supermarkets’ refrigerator sections. It is called FetakΓ€se in German.
