How to make Fresh Coriander Powder at Home
Spices enhance the taste of food. But sometimes, when we use old spices that have lost their punch, the food they are added to doesn’t taste as delicious.
The good news is that making spice powders at home is very easy. Basic spices like red chilli powder, turmeric Powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, etc., can be easily made by toasting the spices and grinding them in a mixer grinder. For spices such as Garam Masala, Sambar Powder, Chaat Masala, etc., which are a combination of various spices, the procedure is the same. The only additional knowledge you need is the ratio in which these spice powders must be combined to obtain the desired taste.
After moving to Germany, I noticed that the spice powders packaged and sold in Indian shops are not as fragrant and fresh as those in shops/supermarkets in India. Because these products are fast-moving in India, the likelihood of getting fresh spices in shops and supermarkets in India is higher than in Germany, where these products are purchased by a small section of the population. This means that consumption is low, which translates to products lying on shop shelves for months together before they are picked by a customer.
The difference in taste became even more evident to me when, after one of my trips to India, I brought back spice powders bought at a local shop in my city in India. I could notice a significant difference in the fragrance and taste of the food.
So, I decided to make some basic spices at home henceforth.
There are three main advantages of making fresh spices at home:
- You can be sure about what has gone into the spice powder. You can physically examine the seeds and remove any foreign material. That is how you make unadulterated and pure spice powder.
- When you make spice powders at home, you can make small quantities and use them within about a month. The aroma and fragrance of fresh spice powders are far better than those of packaged ones lying on the shop shelf for months. This means that the food made with fresh spices is tastier.
- You can make stuff at home in the utmost hygienic conditions, which are sometimes hard to replicate on an industrial scale.
