The Night She Disappeared- Storyline and Book Review

The Night She Disappeared is the story of Tallulah, Kim’s 19-year-old daughter, who goes on a date one night and never returns. It is a story about the search and all the revelations it brings along.

Before her disappearance, Talullah lived in her mother’s house with her mother, Kim, one-year-old child, Noah, boyfriend, Zach, and younger brother, Ryan. She attended college and managed her studies while taking time out for her child. Kim is a more than ideal mother who happily agrees to take care of the child while both Tallulah and Zach go on with their everyday lives.

Tallulah and Zach may not be an ideal couple, but they are dedicated and loving parents to their child. While Zach wants to get married and settle with Tallulah, Tallulah wants to break free from Zach. Tallulah finds Zach’s insecurities and pushy behaviour repulsive and can’t foresee a future with him. Meanwhile, Tallulah finds great companionship with Scarlet, a friend from college, which makes her resolve to leave Zach even stronger.

One night, Zach and Tallulah leave baby Noah in the care of Kim, go on a date and never return. Kim waits till morning, and when she cannot reach out to them, she reports the matter to the police, and the search for the missing couple begins. Kim meets Talullahs friends and acquaintances and finds out that the couple was last seen at Scarlet’s home, but no one seems to know where they disappeared after that. A year passes, and the police have still not been able to solve the case.

Sophie, a writer and author of mystery and thriller books, moves to the town with her boyfriend, who has recently secured the job as the headmaster at Maypole School, a popular school in the small town, which Talullahn and many others her age had attended when they were younger. Sophie gets interested in the case of the missing couple and starts delving deeper into the events that led to the incident. She starts her ‘own’ investigation into the house where Talullah was last seen, the people she met, etc. Coincidentally, someone starts leaving clues for Sophie, as if someone wants the mystery to finally be resolved.

In the end, Sophie puts together the pieces of the puzzle and solves the case of the missing young couple.

The story is narrated from multiple points of view and three different timelines, making the reader literally rack their brains to put things in chronological order and make sense of it. The author has done a fantastic job with the narration, keeping the mother-daughter relationship at the centre stage and cleverly maneuvering through couple relationships, friendships, teenage troubles, and mind games. The plot is gripping, the characters are well-developed, and the story enthrals the reader with its many twists and turns.
