Sometimes I Lie- Storyline and Book Review
Sometimes I Lie is a psychological thriller by Alice Feeney that intrigues you throughout your book-reading journey.
It is a story about Amber Reynolds, a married woman in her mid-thirties, who meets with an accident and goes into a coma. Amber is in bed. She can’t move or see but can hear everything that’s going on around her. Sometimes, she interprets the characters and situations correctly; other times, she is confused and perplexed. She remembers her past in bits and pieces and tries hard to remember what caused the accident and how she landed in this hospital in such a condition.
There are three alternating narrations – one about the present when Amber is in the hospital, one about a week before the accident, which leads to the series of events leading up to the accident and one as a series of diary entries written about 20 years back. As you read through each chapter, you learn more about Amber and all the people in her life, both past and present.
Claire, Alex and Edward play the role of sister, husband and ex-boyfriend in Amber’s life, influencing her greatly. Amber is a working woman, and characters from her professional life also build up the story. These characters, along with characters in Amber’s life 20 years ago, when she was a child, build the framework of this psychological thriller, full of twists and turns that are pretty unpredictable.
Even at the end, after the cause of the accident is revealed and the true personalities of each of the characters are unveiled, there is room for speculation and interpretation. That way, the story seems open-ended, but it also makes it unique and fascinating. Sometimes I Lie is certainly a good read and worth it if you like comprehending edgy characters and appreciate good suspense and drama.
